Coming To Terms With Mariah

The Broadway musical, “Paint Your Wagon” features a song “They Call The Wind Mariah.”

….”Mariah blows the stars around and sends the clouds aflying” came to mind as I watched the chilly wind blowing from my front porch. I just don’t tolerate the wind, especially a cold one. It sends me scurrying back to the warmth of inside. I resent it. In the Spring  and Fall she brings pollen and in the Winter, she brings bone-chillin’ to this skinny one.

So get over it,” I tell myself. Wind happens and so does Winter. That is easier said than done but dreading does no good either. I can stress or get prepared, enjoy the reflection time under my sunlight lamp and snuggle into my  blanket and rest. Ok. I will and not miss this time in, while I pray for Spring to come back soon.

How Well Do You Wait?

Most of us do not wait well. I do better than I used by will and planning. For example, today I waited for the phone repair technician. I had a morning appointment. He called and gave me an approximate time so I paced myself and did not stew about it. I had already planned some things to do that could be interrupted without  it being a big deal. That helped my stress level a lot. I had a book ready to fill in any spare time and something that I enjoy. Do you have some things in line to do when you have to wait–a book, your cellphone (of course, but  don’t let it stress you)? It can be a good time to pray and breathe or even daydream, but not dread.

Take a Pajama Day

Bruce Sturgeon, an acupuncturist in Asheville, introduced me to this concept. Take a morning or day if possible, to just stay in you jammies and rest, read, whatever  but take positive time out. Staying in your jammies re-enforces the rest idea. This certainly breaks stress patterns.

More About Allergies

I have had allergies since I was born. I had years of croup as a small child, so everything has pretty much been tried. I took Allegra for years, but started breaking through with ear infections and sinusitis. Now, I rub my sinus reflexes and just started adding eucalyptus or even Vicks Salve. Essential oils are sold at Sunflower Health. As the pollens get worse, I also take Sinus Clear, a mix of herbs, also from Sunflower. I put local honey in my coffee each morning and sometimes a dollap on my waffle or oatmeal.

Ready, set, enjoy the leaves!

New Laptop

I am writing from my new laptop!!! This is a gift from my son, Steve, also my technical advisor, computer whiz and great guy. He sure reduces my stress!

Fall is in the air, so enjoy reflexology as part of your autumn feast. You will be glad you did.

Total Relaxation

from Valerie Vonner, The Everything Reflexology Book:

” Total relaxation allows the nervous system to activate a healing response. This response reaches out farther into the body, affecting the immune system. The process of homeostasis is a constant flow of balanced energy.”

Depression and Reflexology

Brian J. Mickey, M.D., PhD, discusses ” The Root of Your Depression”  in esperanza magazine. The synopsis is sorta like this. While this is a complex problem, the major roots of depression are life events, negative perception and neurological processes.

Situational depression can be anything that causes stress like the death of a loved one or loss of a job. Negative perception is when one appraises a situation as bad, even though others do not see it that way. Genetics and environment can influence this. One example of this is childhood abuse. These can often be helped by counseling and stress reduction techniques like Reflexology.  The last one, neurological processes, brain function, may need medication as well as life changes. Most often, it is a combination of all three–a situation triggers the other two.

I love this quote:

” Our human capacities to recognize, accept, and act on our on behalf are our greatest strengths in coping when illness strikes.”

Be Still and Enjoy the Show

The weather radio went off at 3:15 a.m. I was then wide awake. I just went ahead and got up, although the storm was suppose to go north of us.

With coffee cup in hand, the trio of cats and I went outside to be greeted by a lightning show. Now, I am not terrified of storms but let’s say that I have a very healthy respect for them, especially after the tornadoes that hit this area. I have a designated spot in my closet when the siren goes off.

It takes a few minutes to decide whether to retreat or rock. The cats are cool, so I sit down and settle in for the show. ” Be still and know that I am God” comes to mind. That is fine until the wind picks up. I get up, open the door, call the cats …… they won’t come in! Well, shoot, I sit back down and rock, although a bit edgey about it by now. The wind calms and the show continues. I chill. A little later, the wind picks up but I am cool. The cats scamper about and I drink and rock. By now,  I am mostly enjoying the show. Closer thunder and I am at the door with reluctant cats joining me. We head inside and the rain storm begins. I thought Tigger was still outside and called and called. He did not come so I went inside. Going to get my tablet, there he lay. I guess he was quicker than I thought. Alright, interesting way to start the day.
